Being A Smart Giver- Goodness in Giving Week 4

For a variety of reasons sometimes the only way we have to give is through giving money.  It makes us feel good to give money to a cause that we believe in.  However, sometimes we need to be cautious in the way we “spend” our donation money.  However, we must look at those times when helping a single person just does not help that individual.

flower-hands-giving-give-gift-take-1Living in a town on the interstate we see a rather specific type of situation where helping really isn’t.  First, there is the category of the professional beggar.  They stand outside grocery store parking lots and at the top of exit ramps on the freeway among other places.  With hand written signs on cardboard they beg for help – anything.  “Will work for food” and other statements meant to pull on our heartstrings are held up to be read.  But stop and offer them a job? Oh ho!  Then the response is quite a different thing.  One gentleman (and I use that word lightly) answered my query as to whether he wanted to work for an afternoon by actually throwing his brand name thermal coffee cup at me.

It pulls at our heartstrings to see someone in difficult circumstances.  However, when we give money to them we can be perpetuating their agony.  Numerous studies had been conducted that categorically prove that when you have financial donating to do that it is best done to an institution rather than an individual.  The Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the local homeless shelter are all places where your funds could be better used.  If you are concerned about how much of your donation for the charity will actually go to helping others there are numerous watchdog agencies reporting on non-profits.

care-feeling-female-couple-give-goodness-handIt is difficult to see that old man sitting on his backpack on the side of the road.  He presents a pathetic figure.  Rather than give him money which only gives a short term fix, offer to give him a ride to the local shelter where he can really be helped.  Giving is good – we all know that, but in today’s world one needs to be an informed giver!

Put The Phone Down – Goodness in Giving Week 3

In our May series Goodness is Giving this week we will be focusing on helping our neighbors and friends.  There was a time when knowing your neighbors was the norm and it was easy for neighbors to call upon one another for help.  Today with jobs around the world and the global economy, it is sometimes difficult to create those connections of walk-shoes-shoe-leg-pavement-sidewalk-roadcommunity.  A community does not just happen, it is something that grows over time with an ebb of flow of people that create it.

With ipods, tablets, smart phones, personal computers and our modern technology we can become very insular and self-focused.  Granted this may not always be a bad thing, but in the context of community it may well be a detriment.  Get outside and meet the folks in the community…walk to the store.  Help an elderly neighbor carry her groceries home from the market.  Offer to help the mother of 3 trying to corral the children into the car.

friends-friend-she-people-woman-man-coupleToday we are becoming inured to the difficulties of those around us.  We are so busy with our personal communications devices we are driving off the road or walking in to fountains, but we feel we are too busy to connect in our own neighborhood.  Put the Phone Down!  Make the commitment to spend at least an hour a week interacting with your neighborhood.  It is through connections of concerned and caring people that we can change the world.  To enhance your enjoyment of your connection experience take a walk around your neighborhood and visit with the folks you find there.

heart-friendship-love-eternity-trust-feelingThe positive energy garnered from just paying attention to someone or something outside of ourselves is amazing and long lasting.  Take the time to step outside yourself and look back in to see if you are reaching out to your community in a way you are proud of.  There just might be some fantastic rewards for both you and your community by your just becoming an active part.  When we give to our community, we are creating strong bonds that will help include us in our own community.  By giving of our time and energy to the community in which we live we are rewarded with stronger bonds, friendships, and people to rely on when you need help.  Those are some great benefits, right?

If Everyone Did A Little! – Goodness in Giving Week 2

earth-blue-planet-globe-planet-space-universe-allRather than giving to a person this week we are going to talk about giving back to that which sustains us.  Whether you call her Planet Earth, Mother Earth, or Gaia the planet upon which we live is worthy of our care.

For those bound in city lives it may seem like it would be a difficult to give back to the earth but there is more than you know.  An easy one for an urban dweller would be to participate in your city’s recycling program.  Most communities have one and they make it easy to participate. Another idea for the urban dweller would be to start a community garden or volunteer to help out at one nearby.  You do not have to know how to garden at a community garden – there’s always someone that is willing to help others learn more about gardening!  Join a garden club.  Help with clean up days in a local park.  Use environmentally sound products.  Become involved in the environmental health of your community.

rose-bloom-bud-flower-white-pink-tint-shapelyThe same challenges for participation can face the rural dweller.  Due to distances sometimes, it is difficult to participate in community activities – especially when the closest community is 20 miles away over a bad road.  But there are other things you can do!  First, of course, is to take care of what you have…your property.  Are you living in an environmentally friendly way?  Adopt a part of a local highway for clean up.  Take your children to the woods and let them find the joys of the forest.  Take care of your grounds and area and show pride in your surroundings.  I have friends that every year in May they celebrate their moving in to their house by planting another rose bush in the garden.  Using environmentally sound energy is another way to give a little back.

forest-tree-trees-branch-twig-trip-seasonsThere’s an old phrase heard much around groups that go camping:  “Always leave the area better than you found it.”  This need not just be applied to just campers.  Imagine how much nicer place the world would be if everyone lived by that credo?  Every bit that we do is a bit towards helping.  Whether global warming is a natural happening within the climatic cycle or it is a destabilization cause by man, if we do our best to help in the ways that we can, we can truly make a difference.  And, it should always be remembered that when we give back to the earth we are giving back to ourselves as well by making our environment a better place to be.

Giving back to Gaia in these simple and easy ways can really come to mean a lot over time.  You may not think what you are doing is much, but if we each do a little than we can actually change a lot.  So, take a walk, take a hike, get on your mountain bike and take a ride…enjoy the bounty that we receive from the planet we live on…when we enjoy something we appreciate it, when we appreciate it we may just be more willing to protect it.  So, by giving to that which sustains us we sustain ourselves.

The Season of Giving

chokecherry-leaf-600x400Spring is the season of giving.  As we drove out to the river this afternoon it was easy to see the promise of new crops starting to green the field in a soft hue.  Yards in neighborhoods have been fed and weed eaten and now are ready to receive the blessing of soft spring rains and maybe a torrent or two.  In spring, we see the promise of what the year can bring.  The rivers are still running high, bring new nutrients and moisture to other places that have been dry since last spring’s runoff.

Just as the streams, cascades, rills and rushes transport soil and nutrients, so too does the wind.  Trace elements from volcanic eruptions half-way around the globe are deposited to feed the soil.  In spring it feels like everything is about renewal.  Spring is the perfect time to re-commit to our commitment to give.  In the series introduction we talked about giving on the physical plane.  Now our challenge is to look at ways we can give of our time rather than of our stuff.

For many organizations, besides fundraising getting volunteers to help with projects is one of the most difficult.  The number of organizations that are looking for volunteers to help is nearly uncountable!  And, you do not necessarily have to have special training.  It only takes a few minutes on line or checking with your local Chamber of Commerce to find worthy causes to support and give your time to.  There is everything from Special Olympics to Friends of the Theater to Big Brothers and Big Sisters or even your local Animal Shelter!

crocus-detailI like to think of spring volunteer connections as the flowers we plant for ourselves in our lives.  When we reach out and help others we are planting the seeds of potential of new associations and new friendships and we do reap what we sow.   If you plant the seeds now to allow for new friendships to begin you will find rewards you had never thought of and feel better about the summer to come.

So, as your summer schedule begins to fill up, somewhere between the company BBQ and Aunt Liz’s family reunion, try scheduling some time to volunteer for something that you believe in.  If you cannot find something to volunteer at, try thinking of a small way you can give back.  Remember, sometimes all it takes is the actions of one concerned citizen out there to start something that can change a community!

As you watch the earth waking up and nature is granting you the promise of the fullness of her bounty remember that through giving back you strengthen far more than the organization you volunteer for.  Through giving your time you contribute to the cycle of positive energy that can be so powerful.  You strengthen your own connection, and you could find a whole new circle of friends.  You do not have to have tons of time to give.  Some places are happy to have your help for even the first time.

blueskySpring begins to more closer to summer, try injecting a little bit of give back into your schedule.  A good way to start is look at what you like to do – what is fun for you, and find a way to volunteer with it.  What types of places would you look to volunteer at?  Where would you go to give a little back?   As a special contest during the season of giving I’ll be picking my favorite of your posts to this blog about your ideas of different ways you can give this Spring when the Earth is bringing forth so many gifts for us to enjoy!
